Reading the numbers Displacement is full-load, in metric tonnes (1 long ton = 1.016 t; 1 short ton = 0.907 t). "Full load"
is itself imprecise and drifts upward over a class's life, so treat ±5% as noise.
VLS shows headline tactical launch cells; the sub-note gives the mix (e.g. strike-length Mk 41 vs.
soft-launch CAMM). Ships combining large strike cells with many small self-defence cells (Type 26, Sejong) are
not directly comparable cell-for-cell.
Cost — read with care. The "≈2026 US$bn" column converts the reported figure at approximate current
exchange rates and adjusts for US inflation from the quoted year. It is order-of-magnitude, not
procurement-grade. Two big distortions remain: (1) some quotes are program totals that bundle R&D, shore
infrastructure and spares over a tiny production run — this inflates per-hull figures for the Zumwalt, Hobart and
Hunter especially; (2) quotes like the Iver Huitfeldt's are hull-only , with weapons/sensors transferred from
older ships. Values marked * are estimates with no clean sourced figure.
Type labels follow each navy's own designation. Note the "cruiser/destroyer/frigate" line is now largely
political: China's Type 055 (here a destroyer, as China rates it) is classed a cruiser by the US Navy, and
several "frigates" (Hunter, F126, Type 26) out-displace older destroyers.
